Freedom is something worth fighting for

For me, free­dom is some­thing worth fight­ing for – and fight­ing for hard. Free­dom gives you the oppor­tu­ni­ty to be who you are and to lead a good and ful­fill­ing life.

You can do what­ev­er you like to do or be who­ev­er you want to be as long as you do not lim­it the free­doms of oth­ers in doing so. That’s how I see it. But we should all con­sid­er what con­se­quences it has, when we live as we want.

We all know free­dom can be volatile and fleet­ing. Free­dom is rarely for­ev­er. The way soci­ety works today, the way we choose to live, it will lim­it the free­doms of nature, oth­er species, and future gen­er­a­tions if we don’t do it sus­tain­ably. Run­away inequal­i­ty, unnec­es­sary over-con­sump­tion, inva­sive ran­dom mass-sur­veil­lance, bla­tant sex­ism, deple­tion of resources and degra­da­tion of ecosys­tems, dis­trust in the polit­i­cal sys­tem, it all lim­its or threat­ens our abil­i­ties to lead free lives today and in the future.

That’s why I co-found­ed The Alter­na­tive in 2013. We want to do it dif­fer­ent­ly. We want a glob­al and ambi­tious tran­si­tion to a sus­tain­able world focus­ing on cul­tur­al, social, and envi­ron­men­tal sustainability.

Only if we do that, we can pro­tect free­dom where we already enjoy it and spread free­dom to are­nas where it is lim­it­ed or not even exist­ing today.

Uffe Elbæk wurde 1954 in Däne­mark geboren, 1991 grün­dete er die Wirtschaftss­chule „KaosPi­lots“ (zu Deutsch: „Chaospi­loten“), die als Vor­bild für viele Schulen in Nor­we­gen, Schwe­den und den Nieder­lan­den gilt. Von 2007 bis 2009 wech­selte er sein Arbeits­feld und wurde CEO für die World Out­games 2009, ein Sport- und Kul­tur­fes­ti­val für Homo- und Trans­sex­uelle, das mit Men­schen­recht­sar­beit ver­bun­den ist.

2011 zog Uffe Elbæk für die linkslib­erale Partei „Radikale Ven­stre“ ins Par­la­ment, wo er zum Kul­tur­min­is­ter in der Regierung Helle Thor­ing-Schmidt gewählt wurde. 2012 legte er sein Amt allerd­ings auf­grund von Vor­wür­fen der „Gün­stlingswirtschaft“ wieder nieder. Später wurde er von diesen Vor­wür­fen wieder freigesprochen.

Im Jahr 2013 ver­ließ Elbæk die „Radikale Ven­estre“ und zog als Frak­tion­slos­er ins Par­la­ment, ehe er noch im sel­ben Jahr Partei „Alter­na­tivet“ grün­dete, die 2015 erst­mals für die kom­mende Wahl zuge­lassen wurde. Zu Anfang als chan­cen­los betra­chtet, kon­nte Elbæk mit sein­er Partei mit 4,8 % der Stim­men bei der Folket­ingswahl 2015 (Wahl zum dänis­chen Par­la­ment) ins Par­la­ment einziehen. Mit „Alter­na­tivet“ set­zt Uffe Elbæk sich vor allem für die ökol­o­gis­che, soziale und ökonomis­che Nach­haltigkeit Däne­marks ein.

Uffe Elbæk lebt mit Jens Ped­er­sen in ein­er einge­tra­ge­nen Part­ner­schaft und hat zwei Kinder aus früheren Beziehungen.
